Welcome back to Olney Friends School!
It’s hard to believe that July is winding down. A mixture of new and returning students will be arriving to our quiet campus in one month. As we prepare for Olney Friends School’s 180th year, here is a look at what’s to come in August and September!
Student Return Schedule
Thursday, August 24th: Student dorm staff arrive
Friday, August 25th: New students arrive
Sunday, August 27th: Returning students arrive
All students, unless other arrangements have been made, are expected to arrive to campus on the dates listed above. If you have additional questions about arrival times, please contact us via email (email@example.com) or call 740-425-3655.
Parents and guardians are welcome to help their child move into the dorms and to socialize informally with other parents, students, and staff members throughout the weekend. We will have refreshments and snacks available in the Music Box on Friday and Sunday.
Also, please review the What to Bring to Olney document for a list of items students should have with them at the start of the year.
All students and faculty will be reading the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. We will be conducting a school-wide discussion about the book early in the academic year, so make sure to familiarize yourself with the text before school begins!
Quaker Education Workshop
Monday, August 28th and Tuesday, August 29th
During academic hours, students and faculty will begin the year with workshops intended to introduce (or perhaps reintroduce for many) the values inherent to Friends education. Fall sports also begin on Monday, August 28th.
Almost Anything Goes
Wednesday, August 30th
The annual ice-breaking extravaganza affectionately known to Olney’ites as “AAG” will take up most of the day on Wednesday. For the sake of those experiencing their first AAG, we don’t want to give too much away. That said, be prepared for some fun-in-the-sun!
Classes Begin on Thursday, August 31st
After establishing the social and educational foundations for the year, classes will begin on Thursday, August 31st.
All-Student Bonding Weekend
Friday, September 1st – Sunday, September 3rd
Yet another annual tradition takes place at the start of the academic year — the fourteen mile hike to Raven Rocks! While a brave handful actually make the entire journey each year (with a few even hiking/running back to campus the next morning), shuttles are available to commute all students to the camp site. A cookout and slumber under the stars cap off an exciting introductory week.
Also, if you have not done so already, be sure to follow us on Facebook for regular updates about all the exciting things happening here at Olney Friends School.
We look forward to seeing all of you back on campus soon!
