Interactive African Culture Workshop

Humanities students participated in this special event with educator and author Kelly Cunnane.

Thursday, February 4, 2010

Colorful clothing, prayer rugs, and musical instruments were some of the many artifacts Kelly Cunnane brought to an interactive workshop on West African culture attended by Olney Friends School humanities students on February 4.

Cunnane has authored three children’s picture books, including the award-winning For You Are a Kenyan Child. Her interest in African culture began with service in the Peace Corps in Kenya. Over the years, she has taught English as a second language in a wide variety of countries around the world.

Cunnane lives in Maine. Her son attends Barnesville High School in Barnesville, Ohio.

Documentary Film and Q&A with Filmmaker Curt Ellis

Curt talks to Rosie

The film traces the journey of two best friends, Curt Ellis and Ian Cheney, who return to Iowa to investigate the environmental impact of an acre of corn they planted. Their journey takes them by canoe and paddleboat down the waterways affected by runoff from modern, large-scale farming. Their former collaboration, “King Corn,” won a Peabody Award.

Student performances represent the culmination of several weeks’ focus on gymnastics, as all students during the third academic quarter devote their sports block (at least two afternoons a week) to mastering brand-new skills.

The exhibition happens annually on the Friday before spring break, with many parents in attendance. The evening culminates in a candlelit presentation by the girls, as they sing to the boys.

Like a Phoenix Rising?

In 1910, Olney arose from the ashes when the Main Building was heavily damaged by fire. Last year we celebrated ten years since a more recent rebirth of the school. Mindful of the school’s rich resources, including its history, we will examine the way forward that is unfolding for Olney. The Board of Trustees has started a process of discernment for the school’s future. A series of “summit” meetings during the 2010-2011 school year will be held to gather and develop a vision for the emerging Olney.

Jack Hanna Visits Captina Creek

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Dozens of Olney Friends School students participated in a local event sponsored by the Belmont Soil and Water Conservation District and the Friends of Captina Creek. The two groups invited Jack Hanna from the Columbus Zoo to Belmont County to raise awareness about protection of Captina Creek. Hanna, accompanied by his zoo animals, appeared at the Carnes Center in St. Clairsville.

The students arrived early for the all-afternoon and all-evening event to help with setup, check in guests, and park vehicles. The Captina Creek has been recognized both for its commendable water quality and for being home to rare and endangered species, including the eastern hellbender. Its headwaters run through the Olney Friends School campus.

Wheeling Heritage Trail Bicycle Tour

Other riders from Olney included director of maintenance Joel Rockwell ’83, front office manager Shelley Rockwell ’82, business manager Bev Shull ‘68, board member John Rockwell ‘56, and his spouse and former OFS office manager Wanda Rockwell ‘56, and webmaster Bill Cullingford.

For Olney Friends School students and faculty

Link to directions

Irene McHenry, PhD, Executive Director of the Friends Council on Education (FCE), will explore a variety of contemplative methods to support the development of self-awareness, stress reduction, empathy, emotional intelligence, and social skills. Through disciplined practice, participants will strengthen the core skills underlying all learning: concentration, observation, and open, receptive awareness with a positive, curious attitude.

The workshop is made possible by a grant from the Trust for the Meditation Process, a charitable foundation supporting contemplative practice among Christians and encouraging dialogue among all contemplative traditions.

For more information about the foundation, visit www.trustformeditation.org .

Olney’s student population, and its teachers, come from all over the world and bring many different faith traditions. The school community meets twice daily for Collection, and gathers twice weekly for worship in the manner of Friends (Quakers). Some use the time in silent reflection.
